A Woman's Need for Iron

Research shows that Canadian females of reproductive age are more at risk of iron deficiency. The prevalence of iron deficiency in females 19-50 years of age is 18.2%.*

Different life stages and circumstances may increase the risk of iron deficiency due to factors such as:

• Increased Iron requirements (e.g., pregnancy, lactation)
• Decreased dietary intake (e.g., vegetarian or vegan diets, limited dietary variety)
• Increased iron loss (e.g., menstruation, regular blood donation)
• Reduced Iron absorption (e.g., certain medications or gastrointestinal conditions)”

Women

Age 10 to 14: Puberty & Menstruation

During adolescence, growth and the onset of menstruation may increase iron requirements. Adequate dietary intake is important during this stage. A healthcare professional can assess whether additional iron intake is appropriate.

Age 15 to 45: Childbearing Years

Menstruation and pregnancy increase iron requirements. Blood volume rises during pregnancy to support maternal and fetal development, increasing the need for iron. Healthcare providers can assess iron status and recommend appropriate management if needed.

Age 55+: Later Adulthood

In later adulthood, factors such as dietary intake, medication use, and changes in absorption may affect iron levels. Individuals should consult their healthcare professional if they have concerns about iron intake or absorption.
